there eyes..........
1. "Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men. Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember, and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly." (page 1).
i think this is saying that mens dreams can come to them or sail away and only land when the person has given up hope and its to late this would refer to the time aspect of it the dreams die over time but women stay focused and keep the dreams alive and wait patiently for the dream to come to them
2. "[Janie] was stretched on her back beneath the pear tree soaking in the alto chant of the visiting bees, the gold of the sun and the panting breath of the breeze when the inaudible voice of it all came to her. She saw a dust-bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister-calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight. So this was a marriage! She had been summoned to behold a revelation. Then Janie felt a pain remorseless sweet that left her limp and languid." (page 11).
this is romanticism it gives a lot of detail to each different object such as the bee and the blossom and it is all about marraige and love and realization

paper 3
2. Journal Paper. This paper will be comprised of 4 – 6 journal entries. These entries should be written “in the field” and then brought back indoors, typed up, and edited.
The purpose of this paper is to combine close observation of our natural world with some reflections on your world. The goal is to observe and describe some of the natural world around the Proctor campus while mirroring Thoreau’s journals.
- record any observations of nature
- write how you or people "should" live to improve their lives – reflections on society
- explore what happens to you & your thoughts when you slow down
- digress and let your mind wander
Requirements: You need to include FOUR specific elements of nature in DETAIL. This might be the wind, the light, a type of bug, the look of a group of trees, the signs of autumn, a close up description of a spot in the woods. This shows your ability to “see” closely. Use sensory details. Also, include FOUR thoughts on society, your life, human nature.

emily dickinson
i would not call emily dickinson a transendentalist although she shows a few qualitys such as the mention of nature in a few poems it is not for nature but against she is more for the material things she says "i dreaded that first robin so, but he is mastered now, and i'm accustomed to him grown, he hurts a little though this isnt so much about the robin but what it symbolises which is the coming of winter which emily dickinson obviuosly didnt like but emmerson would look at winter as a challenge and a chance to better yourself. she also hates bees where as emmerson loves all life

paper topic 2
3. Look closely at either “Young Goodman Brown” or “The Minister’s Black Veil” and identify the dominant tone (the author’s attitude) of the short story. Then set about answering how Hawthorne goes about achieving this tone. When writing this paper, you may find it helpful to discuss literary devices and techniques such as foreshadowing, irony, figurative language, narrative pace, etc. Please include a number of quotations to back up your answer.

the minister's black vail
1)such was the effect of this simple piece of crape, that more than one woman of delicate nerves was forced to leave the meeting-house. yet perhaps the pale-faced congregation was almost as fearful a sight to the minister, as his black veil to them.
i really likr this short couple of sentances because it shows how such a simple thinng such as a black veil can have such a big effect.
2)"i cant really feel as if good Mr. Hooper's face was behind that piece of crape," said the sexton
this shows how a simple covering of the face can change how you are persevied by other people and that people think it is somebody else who has inhabited your body almost.

young goodman brown
1)"friend" he said stubbornly,"my mind is made up. not another step will i budge on this errand.what if a wretched old woman do choose to go to the devil when i thought sje was going to heaven: is that any reason why i should quit my dear faith and go after her?"
this is basically saying why should i do something and follow you just because they are doing it and also the word faith could have a double meaning because of the fact his wife was called faith or it could mean faith in god he wants to know why he should follow the devil to hell.
2)"let us hear which will laugh loudest.think not to frighten me with your deviltry. come witch, come indian powwow, come devil himself, and here comes Goodman Brown. you may as well fear him as he fear you."
he is challenging the devil after thinking he has lost his wife and is showing that the devil sholud be as scared of him as he is of the devil he also challenges the witch and the indian powwow which are worshippers of the devil.
