1)"friend" he said stubbornly,"my mind is made up. not another step will i budge on this errand.what if a wretched old woman do choose to go to the devil when i thought sje was going to heaven: is that any reason why i should quit my dear faith and go after her?"
this is basically saying why should i do something and follow you just because they are doing it and also the word faith could have a double meaning because of the fact his wife was called faith or it could mean faith in god he wants to know why he should follow the devil to hell.
2)"let us hear which will laugh loudest.think not to frighten me with your deviltry. come witch, come indian powwow, come devil himself, and here comes Goodman Brown. you may as well fear him as he fear you."
he is challenging the devil after thinking he has lost his wife and is showing that the devil sholud be as scared of him as he is of the devil he also challenges the witch and the indian powwow which are worshippers of the devil.

thoreau's journals
1) the world is a fit theatre today in which any part may be acted. there is this moment proposed to me every kind of life that men lead anywhere, or that imagination can paint.
i think this is trying to say that there are so many possibilities in life and you could be anything in todays world if only you set your mind to it and try instead of just sitting there
2) a man may gather his limbs snugly within the shell of a mammoth squash, with his back to the northeastern boundry, and not be unusually straightened after all. our limbs, indeed, have room enough, but it is our souls that rust.
i think this is a great quote and it is trying to say that yes you can stay in one place and do the same thing every day and continue to live but only to some extent of the word where as it is much better for mind body and soul to get out of a routine and try new things and experiance the whole of life to its fullest.

what i want out of class
i want to become a better speller and get to know more about the works of american writers
hwk for 9/18/07
1)"they do not seem to me to be such; but if i am a Devil's child, i will live then from the Devil. no law can be sacred to me but that of my nature."
i think this means that you shouldent do something just because everyone thinks it right you do but you should do whats natural to you and what you believe is right.
2)Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.
i think this means that even if you lose everything you have it doesnt matter if you still have your thoughts and your own mind is still intact
3)If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of god which had been shown.
i think this is trying to point out that just because that something is there all the time we take it for granted but if the same thing only appered every so often then we would be amazed by it and preserve it for generations
4)i am glad to the brink of fear. in the woods too, a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough, and at what period soever of life, is always a child. in the woods, is perpetual youth.
i think this is trying to say that the woods and being out in nature is good for the soul because it gets rid of the distractions of the city and breaks down life to the simpilest form and it is also trying to say that it makes the writer feel younger and replenished and it says that the youth could last forever.

henry david thoreau where i lived and what i lived for
1) to him whose elastic and vigorous thought keeps pace with the sun, the day is a perpetual morning
i think this is trying to say that he who rises early and by his own means will benifit more and get more done in the day and enjoy the day more than someone who sleep most of the day and dosent really wake up at all and it will always seem like morning because the day will go so fast.
2)the millions are awake for physical labour; but only one in a million is awake enough for effective intellectual exertion, only one in a hundred millionsto a poetic or divine life.
i think this is trying to say that anyone can simply wake up and go 2 work and watch there life go bye but only a few people think about their lives and what they are doing and have a efective take on life and do something with their time on even fewer people can be poetic about life or live the divine life.

2. Comparison. Emerson and Thoreau are the most recognizable proponents of Transcendentalism, but each emphasized different features of the movement. Take some aspect of their thought or writing and explore the similarities and differences their works exhibit. In the process, you should arrive at a clearer understanding of Transcendentalism in general and these two writers in particular. Topics to consider include self-reliance, individualism, and the importance of nature.
